The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Maya is continuing to feed well. Eating Three meals a day, 2 fruit snacks and 3-4 bottles a day. Maya likes most things but her favorites are Bananas, Peach, Strawberries, Mangoes, Pineapple and kiwi fruit. Her favorite main meals are Chicken, sweet potato, sweetcorn and carrot bake, Cottage pie, Salmon Fish pie and Spaghetti Bolognaise. She also loves Custard, yoghurt and Rice pudding. We have been trying to encourage Maya to drink water and juice from a beaker but had little success. We will preserve though!!
Additional Care
Maya has spent most of this month in Peterborough hospital. On the 8th July she was admitted into Peterborough hospital by ambulence following an uncontrollable fever and vomiting followed by respiratory failure. Maya was stabilized by the ambulance and resus staff at Peterborough then transported to Addenbrookes for further investigation and specialist care. The Maya's blood results were showing a severe infection and septic shock. Consultants were concerned that Maya's shunt had become infected and performed a MRI scan and a shunt tap. Meanwhile Maya was started on an intense course of IV antibiotics once canular access was gained after over 20 attempts at canulating her as well as an unsuccessful IO access attempt. Mayas CSF results and MRI scan showed no infection markers so thankfully Maya did not have a shunt infection. Maya was kept on an intense course of antibiotics for a week and monitored closely at the hospital. After thorough investigations Maya was discharged and the episode was put down to a severe reaction to a UTI.
On the 22nd July Maya was admitted back into Peterborough hospital for a short stay of 3 days with another UTI causing fever. Although this fever was controlable by calpol we wanted to be sure she would be ok and not have a repeat of the week before. Maya was given 2 doses of IV antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics to prevent further infection and calpol/neurofen to control her temperature.
On the 6th August We noticed Maya has cloudy, smelly urine again on catheterizing her but she was showing no other signs of infection. Her temperature was 36.7C and she was eating and drinking normally. We took her to see the consultant for a once over and then left as she was showing no symptoms. Later that day at about 1pm Maya was admitted back in to Peterborough hospital by ambulance following a spike in temperature, seizure and respiratory failure. Maya was stabilized in resus and give diazapan to stop the seizure. Maya was started on an intense course of IV antibiotics whilst investigations were started again. Maya had another UTI. We stayed in hospital for another week and then discharged on a different propholatic antibiotic.
On the 13th August Maya had an ultrasound scan of her kidneys to look at kidney and Urinary tract function. Maya is showing good function apart from some reflux on her left kidney.
