The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Maya is continuing to feed well. She has lots of different food and she is now managing fork mashed and chopped solids. She continues to try new things including plums, nectarine, sausage and even some buttercream from Nana's Oreo birthday cake. We have kept trying to give her juice and water but she is still very reluctant! She knows what she likes - and that is MILK MILK MILK!
Additional Care
Maya started the month in hospital and managed a further 3 trips to hospital.
On the 22nd August we stopped catherizing after discussions with Maya's Urologist team to try and prevent further UTI infections. The risk to Maya's health of infection from cathiterizing was now seen to be higher than the risk from infection from residue urine infections.
On the 25th August, Whilst visiting Maya's Great Opa and Great Oma in Weston super mere Maya developed another UTI. She had a fever and the usual symptoms but we managed to control it with Calpol. We decided it would be best to return home to Whittlesey in case she was to become worse. We took the long drive back to Peterborough with contingency plans for emergency hospital stops on the way. Crossing them off the list as we got closer to home.
On the 26th August we took Maya back into the assessment unit at Peterborough as she remained unwell and dependent on calpol to maintain her temperature. By 1:30pm Maya's fever had spiked and had become uncontrollable again. She became very agitated and then it all began again. Maya had another seizure lasting 30 minutes followed by respiratory failure and was rushed back into resus to be stabilised. Yet another intense course of antibiotics were started and we had to hope it was yet again just a UTI and not her shunt. Maya stayed in hospital for another week until her course of antibiotics were finished and her urine and blood tests were clean.
Maya then remained home infection free for the rest of the month.
