Maya's new wheels!!! (and other bits! - August
Update.....
Just a quick update for everyone. Firstly apologies for the delay. There has been so much going on with Maya that getting the perfect chair and fit for Maya has been quite difficult.
In November Maya underwent major surgery to her hips. It took 2 surgeons and many many support staff over 7 hours to complete the bilateral hip reconstruction for Maya and she was put in a hip spica cast for 6 weeks. Maya was in a lot of pain and unable to move at all. She spent of that 6 weeks laid in bed or propted up on a bean bag. Once the cast was removed Maya had lost most of her strength. She was unable to sit independently or crawl. Despite our best efforts and lots of physio her arms had become very weak too. This meant the type of chair Maya had been dreaming of was unsuitable and we could not have her measured or fitted for one.
Fast forward to now.....
Maya has been measured and fitted for her dream wheels a.k.a 'Whizzy Wheels'. The chair has been order from Mobility aids centre, Standground. We just need to finalise payment and then we will be bringing 'Whizzy wheels' home!!
The surgery was a success and fingers crossed her hips continue to develop well. She has done incredibly well and has worked so so hard to regain her balance and strength to be able to use a lightweight chair again. At times it has been heartbreaking watching her get so frustrated. We have all cried. She has been so determined and so strong. She has battled on. She has fought so hard and has done absolutely everything that has been asked of her (and my god we push her!) and so much more. We are back to see her surgeons next month where a decision will be made to when the metal work that is currently holding everything together will be removed. We are hoping this will be in summer holidays. Hopefully recovery from the hardware removal will be a lot easier as she should be able to avoid a cast again and just have her braces.
We look forward to sharing pictures and videos of her in her new chair very very soon!
